Over the weekend there was a discussion in my house about how to find car insurance deals. It was Father’s Day and we had an assortment of family members visiting. The answers ranged from those who simply stuck with their old insurance companies and never considered that they could find the same coverage with a different company cheaper, to those who admitted they shopped around every six months at renewal time, and a younger relative who looked blank. She is about to take her drivers test and had no idea how to find car insurance deals!
Of course arguments broke out between various factions, nothing heated, but the majority recommended going online and getting quotes that way. I interjected and asked if everyone knew they were not only getting the best car insurance deals but were they getting the best coverage too. That’s when the room went quiet, until finally my sister in law confessed that she had been underinsured when her new car had been taken for a joy ride and damaged to boot. The room went quiet again after she confessed how much out of pocket it had cost her.

So the moral of this story is the more coverage you can get for your money the better. Cheap car insurance is often inadequate, so don’t fall into that trap. Many of those comparison sites you shop on will give you their best quotes, only to raise them after you talk to them and explain certain things. I recommended the young driver consult an agent – she is at University, made honor roll at school etc., and excels at what she does – I told her to tell the agent that when it comes time for her to get car insurance. I also told the other old stick-in-the-muds how to find car insurance deals on the internet or also recommended they talk to a local car insurance agent as some of them have no computer. How to find car insurance deals is often a question of personal choice, but an experienced agent will always recommend the best coverage and policy, without you having to commit all your personal information to cyberspace.
