Student Car Insurance

Car Insurance for Students

As if a college education didn’t cost enough already, when the time gets closer to going off to college there will be additional expenses that were not thought of or budgeted for and car insurance for students can be an expensive oversight.

For younger students who have not had too many years of driving experience the premiums are going to be high and also depend on a number of things, such as the zip code where the student will be residing. It will be cheaper if he or she is going to a rural college obviously, rather than a college in a major city and in those cases it may be better and cheaper for the student to use public transport as purchasing car insurance, maintaining the vehicle and paying for parking for someone who is rarely going to use a vehicle, really doesn’t make sense.

The only way to get the most economical car insurance for students will be if they have purchased a reasonably sensible car. That vehicle should have every modern safety feature, including air bags, ABS brakes, running lights and security features such as an alarm. The vehicle should also have a small engine, as the bigger the engine the more car insurance will cost, especially if the student is an inexperienced driver. Your little Einstein may want to drive a muscle car, but it will be less risk if he drives a small sedan and consequently cost less in insurance premiums, and it will also be a lot less worry for you.

Car insurance for students will be somewhat cheaper if the student has maintained good grades through high school – this shows that he or she is somewhat sensible in the eyes of the insurer, and consequently less risk. By taking any driver’s education and defensive driving courses your state offers will also prove to the insurer that the student driver is serious about safety.
Car insurance for students and young inexperienced drivers will always cost more, until after a few years of ticket-free and accident-free driving proves to the insurance company that they are less high risk than many young drivers, who unfortunately account for a large majority of accidents and fatalities on our roads.
